X-rays are used to spot cavities or dental caries before they further erode the surface of the tooth (creating another infection risk). They also detect potential overlap in teeth that are “coming in.” When there is extensive damage to a tooth, it may be extracted, and in the case of nerve damage, a root canal may be performed. These procedures can typically be prevented if biannual dental appointments are kept, and early caries are caught before they can become a larger problem.
